REALLOCATE is an international project focused on transforming streets and public spaces to support climate-friendly mobility and safer neighbourhoods.
Within the project, we work with schools and local communities to redesign areas around schools so that they become safer, healthier, and more welcoming for children, teachers, and residents.
Many streets around schools are dominated by car traffic, creating unsafe and stressful environments for children and limiting the quality of neighbourhood public space.
Improving school surroundings can significantly increase safety, reduce pollution, and encourage everyday walking and cycling.
Using placemaking methods, we work with students, parents, teachers, and residents to co-create solutions tailored to the local context.
The process combines:
The project focuses on a residential neighbourhood in Ursynów, around schools on Koncertowa Street.
Working together with the city road authority, the school, the housing cooperative, and residents, we helped introduce a “school street” — restricting car access during morning school hours.
The process continues with further improvements developed jointly with the local community.
REALLOCATE is part of a Horizon Europe project bringing together cities and research institutions across Europe. The initiative explores how street transformation can support sustainable mobility and climate goals.
Partners exchange knowledge and inspiration from cities including Lyon, Bologna, and Barcelona.
Project lead: Trinity College Dublin
Project duration: 2023–2027
Streets around schools are key places where children experience the city every day. Transforming them can improve safety, air quality, and community life while encouraging sustainable mobility from an early age.
